Do Your Ducts Need Sealing?

With winter on the way, we’re going to be using our heating systems much more often, and here in Escondido, CA, that often means a centralized furnace with a system of ducts. The ducts are usually protected from damage by being hidden in the walls and the attic, but damage can still occur. Sometimes, it takes place because of work being done on your home, or it could be caused by animals like raccoons in your ducts. In some cases, it’s simply age causing the bolts and seals to fail. Whatever the reason, however, a breach in your ducts requires professional attention to repair, and it needs to be done sooner rather than later.

Why Is It a Problem?

A breach in your ducts will do one of two things: it will either pull conditioned air out of the system, or bring unconditioned air into the system. Either way, it forces your heater and air conditioner to work harder than it should in order to do its job. That means that your monthly bills will go up and the added strain will eventually create more problems with other components in your system.

A trained technician can seal the breach with duct mastic, restore it with fitted parts, or sometimes simply replace the worn bolt with a new one. Before that happens, however, you need to be able to spot the signs that something is wrong. This can include, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Cold spots or warm spots, created when air from the breach blows against a wall or floor.
  • Strange noises, such as groans, hums or whistles, usually originating at the point of the breach, and usually starting and stopping with your HVAC system.
  • Higher bills, reflecting the heater’s extra efforts to overcome the loss of heating or cooling efficiency.
  • Low air flow or reduced heat levels, reflecting the loss of air power and heating power from the breach.

If you spot these signs, turn off your system and call Ca-West Air Conditioning right away!
