If you’ve started to notice that the skin on your hands is drying out, this is most likely because the air in your home is too dry. This is common during the winter when your heating system removes moisture from the air to heat your home. Another common symptom of dry air is an irritated throat and nasal passages. This can lead to a cough or bloody noses.
Dust and Dust Mites
- Too much humidity – Dust mites thrive in moist environments. If you’re having problems with dust mites, it could be because the air in your home is too humid.
- Too little humidity – When the air in your home is too dry, it can dry out dust mite droppings which then enter your air supply. For some people, these droppings cause allergic reactions.
Mold needs two things to thrive: oxygen and moisture. Your home obviously has an abundance of oxygen. But if the air in your home is too humid it could provide a perfect place for mold to start to grow. If you notice mold starting to show up around your home, it could be that you need less moisture in your air.
If you start to notice that your wood furniture or your floors are starting to crack, this can be a sign that your air is dry—and that it has been for a while. Also, dry air can make your wallpaper start to peel and bubble.
